studio gale design
The design portfolio of Studio Gale is comprised of a mix of residential small commercial projects, whose binding thread is the proximity between design and the construction process. We have a solid base of experience in contracting and fabrication at various scales, which is brought to bear at all phases of a project, from schematic design to construction supervision.
The studio treats its projects as intimately linked to the sculptural work we practice. What always acts as the driver is the physical and tactile experience of it’s inhabitants: how will the lives that will actually be lived here look, and how would they like to? While the aesthetic of the finished object is never disregarded, it is not what begins the process, and so is a product of the choreography within, not the creator of it.

striefler house
Completed 2011
This was a typical Venice bungalow from 1923, which had not been altered since it was constructed. It was a little forlorn and falling apart, and more importantly, had a plan that stemmed from a much earlier concept of family life.
On a very modest budget, the clients wanted to re-imagine the house for their own contemporary notion of that life. Seeing an entirely new rhythm of life in the shell of a discarded one is exactly what the studio was founded for.

agens house
Completed 2010
This house had grown too small for its owners growing family. What began as a project to complete the second floor, became a re-examination of the entire house, its space and aesthetic re-worked to accommodate new occupants and new ideas.
The upper deck and rail, off of the children’s communal play area, is a collaborative design/build project between studio archityp and Capstone Design/Build.

forest knoll house
Completed 2002
We found her in a pretty sad state. You could see she had been beautiful once, but she had been covered in years of neglect, like layer upon layer of bad makeup. So we cut through all that: cleaned her up and let her natural beauty shine through again, and she was beautiful again, like a young bride.
Stoner House
Completed 2015
This little house in West LA was absolutely bursting at the seams from its owners recently expanded family, but they loved the spirit of it and wanted to bring that same language into an expanded version of their home. One of their favorite things was the way the existing house embraced the large tree behind it, and somehow, beyond all our beliefs, we managed to preserve it through the construction and make it the centerpiece of the new house.
G+K House
Completed 2019
This sad little creature had been standing since the early 1920s when my wife and I found it in 2016. It seemed like it could be cleaned up and set right without too much difficulty, but that wasn't even close to true. It had to be completely pulled apart and put back together to get to this result, but it in the end it smiles brightly.

Sunset House
In Progress
This is a project for a 3600sf guest house with its back pressed up against Sunset Boulevard. The owners were anxious to gain the additional space and create a presence that would add to their lush outdoor space, while preserving the existing trees and at the same time blocking some of the noise from the loud street nearby. It was a complex design process and promises to be a complicated build, but we're all very happy with where we've landed.
